Looking for a flow study etude book, but tired of the lack of variety in the market place?  While there are other flow study etudes available, Go With The Flow breaks from the norm by compiling twenty-one, modern-sounding flow study etudes into a single compilation.  Most available etudes are very traditional sounding, and are rooted in simple, tertian harmony.  Many date back more than a hundred years and their maturity is clearly linked to their sound.

Although Go With The Flow does not break from the “moving long tones” concept (“moving long tones” is an alternative term for “flow study”), it does take the musical aspects a step further than other existing studies do.  The etudes in Go With The Flow are skillfully composed to reflect modern times, making them easier to identify with and a more natural choice for today's musician.

For something as commonly used and with so little material to draw from as flow studies, Go With the Flow offers a convenient way to add some much-needed variety to the musician's daily routine.  It is highly recommended for classical musicians seeking fresh material.

This 43-page book is spiral-bound for easy reading and comfortable use on a music stand.

Interesting facts related to this book:

  • Flow Studies, also called “Moving Long Tones”, are commonly used to develop the trumpet student’s sound and phrasing.  The tradition can be traced back to Herbert L. Clarke, and was made popular with modern trumpet players by people like Vincent Cichowicz and Arnold Jacobs.

  • A flow study etude is characterized by primarily stepwise motion and slurs.  In practice, the student is asked to support the airstream as if playing a single sustained note.  In this way, the airstream consists of one steady flow while the fingers and lips work together to move gradually from one register of the instrument to the next.

  • The intended result of practicing flow studies is to develop a cleaner, more musical sound.

  • Go With The Flow can be used as a warm-up.  For trumpet players who use the Daily Routines or The Physical Trumpet Pyramid: buzz the first two etudes, mouthpiece buzz the third and fourth etudes, then add tonguing at Etude No. 12.

  • Etude No. 13 was orchestrated for jazz combo (with four horns) and was used as a prelude to an African 12/8 tune by the jazz combo, Living Rhythms.

  • The flow study etudes in Go With The Flow cover every major key.
